A black rectangle drawn in a PDF viewer, a word processor, or an image editor is usually just another object placed on the page. The original text stays in the file's content stream underneath it, where it can still be selected, copied, or pulled out with a script. Governments, law firms and newsrooms have all published documents that were “redacted” this way — most recently the US Department of Justice, whose December 2025 release of the Epstein files could be un-redacted by selecting the blacked-out text and pasting it elsewhere.
BLACKOUT exports a different file. Each page is rendered and flattened, with your boxes burned into the pixels, and that flattened page becomes the content of the exported PDF. The result carries no text layer to recover — not under the boxes, and not anywhere else on the page. Because the export is built as a new document rather than an edit of yours, the original's hidden properties — author, title, subject, keywords, the software that produced it — do not travel with it either. The trade-off is deliberate: exported pages are images, so they are no longer text-selectable. All of it runs in your browser.

Does the PDF ever leave my browser?
No. Rendering, redaction, watermarking and OCR all run client-side, in your browser. Your PDF is never uploaded, never processed on a server, never logged, and never stored by us. The only requests the tool makes are to check whether your download is covered by the free tier or a subscription — those carry no document data.
What do you store?
Your email address and your Stripe subscription status, so we can tell whether your access is active. No PDF contents, no page images, no extracted text — none of it ever reaches us to store.
Can it find sensitive data for me?
Auto-detect searches the document for supported patterns — email addresses, phone numbers, payment card numbers and some ID numbers — and boxes what it finds, in your browser. It matches patterns; it does not read or understand the document, so anything without a supported pattern (names, addresses, case details) will be missed, and scanned pages are read with OCR, which adds its own error rate. Automatic detection is an assistant, not a guarantee. Always review every page before sharing.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes — one click via Stripe's billing portal. No retention maze, no “are you sure” loops.
I paid but I'm on a new browser or device — now what?
There's no password to reset, because there's no account. On the tool page, click “Paid already? Restore access” and enter your email — if it has active access, a one-time link arrives to restore it on that browser. The link works once and expires in 15 minutes.
How many free downloads do I get?
One free redaction per browser. After that it's £7/mo, £59/year, or £99 once for lifetime access.
